Bears 34, Lions 22
No Love For The Lions or The Lame
The Chicago Bears missed two field goals, two extra points, ran for only 54 yards, failed to recover an onside kick, nearly allowed a safety, and for all we know may have also forgotten to put the seat down.
But, despite such missteps, the Bears still swatted the Detroit Lions 34-22 at Soldier Field on Sunday for their third straight win.
These Bears are an especially crafty bunch and stand 6-3, atop the NFC North.
Mitch Trubisky led the way for the good guys in orange and blue, quarterbacking to the best of his abilities by completing 23 of 30 passes for 355 yards, three touchdown, no interceptions and a four-yard TD run in the second quarter that was a rugged as it was appreciated.
The fine Allen Robinson returned after missing a couple of games with an injury and the 25-year-old receiver had his finest day as a Bear, catching six Trubisky throws for 133 yards and two scores.
He's the Bears' best #12 since Rusty Lisch.
Rookie wideout Anthony Miller refused to be left out of the fun as the kid from Memphis hauled in five passes for 122 yards and one trip to the end zone. (He was also flagged for a stupid penalty and doesn’t know the rules about onside kicks but hey, Charlton Heston was in El Cid.)
All this good stuff happened in the first half as the Bears steamrolled their way to a 26-0 lead. Why 26? Because kicker Cody Parkey missed two extra points which is not only sad and weird but potentially dangerous for the young man who is probably the smallest and slowest guy in the locker room, if not all of Cook County.
Parkey, who wears jersey #1, also missed two field goals on the afternoon which is only slightly more expected but not much more acceptable. Poor dude.
The Bears defense sacked Lions QB Matthew Stafford six times, twice by linebacker Khalil Mack who missed the previous two games with a bad ankle, which had kept him gimpy since back around Columbus Day.
Defensive back Bryce Callahan had a sack and an interception which proves he’s both fast and greedy, which is our kind of fella.
Overall, the Bears defense is better than we'd hoped and even faster than they look.
And so the Bears, who had dropped nine of 10 against Detroit, pinched the Lions and notched their first division victory since beating the Vikings on Halloween, 2016 when half the crowd was wearing William Weld masks.
Now the Vikings come to Soldier Field for a primetime battle on Sunday night. The suddenly resurgent Vikes are 5-3-1 so the Bears need to make it four straight wins to put a little breathing room between them and those Purple Dudes who are always good but rarely as good as they're supposed to be and so let's just keep it the way, OK?
Oh yeah, one more thing: Tarik Cohen. We really like him.
And Jordan Howard, we need more of him.
And Cody Parkey? Hang in there, fella. Even the Rockettes ain't always pretty.
The Bears are having fun, we're having fun and Chicago is getting cold.
Let's not divert.
Let's not worry. --TK
