Lola And The Real Words
Barbara and Vic are enjoying martinis and conversation at Gregory’s Tap on a cold night and Vic keeps looking around the room, eventually to Barbara’s distraction.
“What are you looking for?”
“A payphone. I need to call Bobo.”
“A payphone? A payphone? It’s 2018. You have a cellphone, you sad sack.”
Vic looks at her and sips his martini.
“Good point,” he says and takes out his cell phone and then quickly puts it back in his underwear.
“I’ll call Bobo later. But anyway, like I was saying, I was on the train and these two ladies, both very pretty and tall, were talking about the Kinks, a band I haven’t listened to in ages, and they were saying that Lola is really about, you know, a guy who picks up a transvestite. And I laughed a little bit listening to this thinking these women were joking then they kept talking about it and then I listened to Lola on my Walkman…”
“You mean on your iPhone.”
“Right, my iPhone, and I concentrated more on the lyrics and I realized that it is about a transvestite! It really is! Man, do I feel stupid. It’s a great song, though, I still feel that way, no matter what it’s about.”
Barbara sips her martini and smiles at Vic. The November wind is chilly outside and Gregory’s Tap is crowded with people happy to be out of the cold and huddled over a drink.
“I have to go to the bathroom,” she tells him. “Be back in a moment.”
Vic, always a gentleman, nods and stands up as Barbara gets up and walks across the crowded bar and into the men’s room.
“Wow,” Vic would say to Bobo the next morning, “I really do love those Kinks.” --TK
