Always Open
He is not from America and he apparently does not celebrate Christmas. That is why his sandwich shop is open on Christmas Day.
This is not to say that All Americans celebrate Christmas or that Christmas is only observed in the United States, but it makes the guy buying a sandwich (two, actually) wonder what it is like to come from a distant land, learn the language and customs of a new home, and watch as people make such a big deal out of this holiday that celebrates two men in beards -one who flies around the world giving out toys and another who doesn't have his beard yet because he's just a baby and who is supposed to save us all.
There is not a lot open on Christmas and so we greatly appreciate those who toil away on this special day. Those who make food, pump gas, work at TV and radio stations and newspapers, put out fires, catch criminals and do whatever else is needed.
Working Christmas is not so bad. People tend to be nicer and it's comforting to think that what you do helps others enjoy their holiday. Santa works Christmas Day. So does Jesus. So do countless mothers and fathers and others who are always on the clock no matter what the calendar says.
Christmas is not a day or a season. It's every moment when someone is a bit kinder than they have to be.
But don't we always have to be? --TK
