The Songs After The Season
Now that Christmas is over we can listen to regular music again, even though we know regular music is not as good as Christmas music.
Break out the Beatles, Beck, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, U2, REM, the Supremes, David Bowie, Harvey Danger, Afroman, Amy Winehouse, Simon and Garfunkel, Daniel Johnston, the Animals, Gunhill Road and Blind Faith.
We have not heard them since before Thanksgiving.
Is there new music out there? A quick Internet search says artists with names such as 070 Shake, FKA Twigs, Angel Olsen and Solange had big hits this year. A few months ago we were proud of ourselves when we thought we had discovered a hip, new tune. But then we learned Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John has been around more than ten years.
The Wikipedia page for the song tells us there is also a J.D. Salinger story titled The Young Folks, which was his first published story, in 1940. We have not read it but we used to always read at least the first few pages of The Catcher in the Rye around Christmas because…you know because.
We didn’t do that this year. But we did listen to a lot of music. And the New Year should, rightfully, bring new songs. But it takes a lot of work, sometimes, to listen to something you have not heard before. --TK
