The Spring Effect

Sox Summer
Scribbled on a twisted steel girder lying in the mud, burdened with being all that survives from a church that burned down after standing for 113 years are these words...
Don't Wait To Love....
And so we shall not dawdle in our praise for and appreciation of the Chicago White Sox.
The Sox have not had a winning season since 2012, have been rebuilding since 2017 and were expected to do very little this year besides be a little bit better than last year when they went 62-100 and were uglier than ugly.
But here we are, kids. June is new and the Sox have just completed a 6-1 homestand, their best in years, are a game under .500 and are two games out of the second wildcard spot.
So let us all say yippee and boogie on down to the ballpark.
The latest South Side triumph came on a perfect spring Sunday afternoon when Lucas Giolito, who was one of the worst pitchers in baseball last year, outdueled Zach Plesac and relied on the bat of shortstop Tim Anderson who drove in two and the Sox topped the Cleveland Indians 2-0.
It was funner than a zombie movie at a sleepover.
Giolito has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for May and the AL Player of the week.
The 24-year-old Giolito went 5-0 in May with a ERA of 1.74.
Anderson was AL Player of the Month for April and continues to be the bat-flipping phenom we always dreamed he would be.
Giolito, Anderson, first baseman Jose Abreu and catcher James McCann (who? yes, him) all should make the All-Star team.
And South Side attendance is on the rise. (more vegan options surely help.)
The White Sox have a long way to go and it's hard to image them out-punching the Red Sox, Rangers or Rays for a playoff spot.
But scribbles amid ruins, among weeds, splashed with foggy recollections are a start. --TK
