Nothin's Worthless If You Don't Know Nothin'
Sword of Trust (2019)
Grandpa was crazy. Everyone knew it. Especially at the end.
But some of that crazy crap Grandpa said might have been true. Some people might think that.
And Grandpa saved stuff. Including one really cool thing. And we live in an age of ignorance.
And so, we find ourselves in the extremely funny, sarcastic, witty, timely and somewhat sad world of Sword of Trust, directed by Lynn Shelton who also wrote the script along with Mike O’Brien.
The film gives us Marc Maron, who plays the owner of a pawn shop in Alabama, and Michaela Watkins and Jillian Bell, who have Grandpa’s prized possession, and bring it into the shop and witty wackiness ensues because we’re all convinced that what we have is worth more than it really is or that someone else will think it is.
Especially when it’s a sword and this is America in 2019.
There is nothing funny about being stupid and there is nothing wrong with wanting to make a quick buck but when you combine stupid people with eager people and add a cast of characters that feeds off each other like a seasoned improv troupe, that’s comedy gold, and one of the funniest movies some of us have seen in a long time.
Sword of Trust is silly, farcical, a breaker of a few cinematic rules and we must also add, scary. The movie doesn’t dampen the mood with its moments of fright, that’s not what we mean. What is scary about this movie is that, despite being so unbelievable, it’s quite believable. We live in a time of ignorance, regression and weirdness and that ain’t funny.
But this movie is. Over and over again.
It’s touching, too.
One quibble, though, before we go. This excellent film features just one person of color and that character…wait for it…wait for it…only has a few moments of screen time yet…wait for it…wait for it…this character is…funny!wise!witty!tough!moral!and by far the best person on screen! Wow! What a thing! Hurray for Hollywood!
Sorry, we couldn’t help it.
Great flick, though. --TK
