Three Billion Birds
September 19, 2019
Who Took The Bleepin’ Birds?
She runs through the warm September night thinking about numerous things but mostly the story she read in the Chicago Tribune that morning.
It said there are three billion fewer birds in the United States and Canada than fifty years ago.
Pollution, agriculture, cats and other culprits have unwillingly collaborated to murder the little Gods of the sky.
She runs through the night and remembers she ran out of birdseed about a week ago and thus the birds have not been visiting her yard, leaving the birdhouse alone and sad looking.
She will buy birdseed tomorrow, she thinks as she runs through the September night. She sees two deer, a big one and a baby, on her run. She says a cat dart into some bushes. She sees cars and hears a train.
She wonders how often she sees birds at night. She thinks about it for a long time after she stops running. --TK
