Thanksgiving
There was no parade in Chicago this Thanksgiving. We didn’t see families in the park playing football and there weren’t extra hands to help with all the dishes after dinner because there weren’t many people for dinner.
It’s Thanksgiving in a year of a relentless pandemic, global warming, social upheaval, and universal angst.
And what is the song we listened to while pacing the hardwood floor close to midnight trying to digest our meal and our concern? “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. It was released in 1962 and…what horrible things happened after 1962?
Those things cannot take up space in our head right now because it’s already aching with the horror and slippery sidewalks of America, 2020.
But while “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” is a song of uncertainty it is not a cry of surrender. It is a tune that you have to let take you. Like falling backward into a cold pile of leaves.
Did a dog shit in those leaves? Did a squirrel die in that pile?
Cast your fate to the wind. America’s Thanksgiving of forgiveness, surrender, and sanguinity. --TK
