Bears 36, Texans 7

The Bad and The Beaten

Now we know just how bad the Houston Texans really are.

The Chicago Bears snapped their six-game losing streak on Sunday, topping the Texans 36-7 at Soldier Field along Chicago’s lakefront in a game that started fast and ended curious.

Bears running back David Montgomery sprinted 80 yards for a touchdown on his first carry of the game and that set the pace as the Bears never looked back and, dare we say it, kept their meager playoff hopes on life support.

The Bears are now 6-7. That’s bad. The Texans are still the Texans. That’s worse.

Some said this would be a revenge game for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson whom the Bears passed over for Mitch Trubisky in the draft three years ago. But it was good ol’ Mitch who played as if he had vengeance in his blood on this day, throwing for three touchdowns and no interceptions and looking a bit similar to the fella the Bears hoped they were getting way back when.

Mitch outplayed Deshaun, which was nice, but we shall not kid ourselves, the Texans are putrid and you almost take pity on Watson and Texans defensive legend J.J. Watt who have to be wondering how they got so crappy so quickly. Injuries and at least one bad trade are the reasons, of course, but as the Bears can attest, being bad has many fathers.

And yes, the Bears are still bad. But for one sunny Chicago Sunday, at least, they seemed to forget that. They ran the ball well, didn’t cough it up, and the defense looked like it was attacking, not retreating, as it had been since roughly Columbus Day.

Next, the Bears face the Vikings in Minnesota and if they win that one…

    ….they won’t.

    Will they?

Christmas came early on Sunday. We cannot expect it to come again. --TK
