Dreaming of a Green Christmas

Come North, All Ye Faithful
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus want you. So do Kaetlyn Osmond, Catherine O’Hara, and Malcolm Subban.
The world is getting warmer and that’s very bad for most of us but might be good for Russia and Canada because when those cold places warm up the land will be more fertile and those countries will grow a lot more food and need a lot more people to help harvest it.
We only hope they’re nice to us down here in Americaland. Russia might not be but Canada still likes us, doesn’t it? Santa doesn’t officially live in Canada but spends a lot of time there, playing chess, wrestling, reading graphic novels and what-not, and what better ambassador can the Great Friendly North have than Saint Nick?
Santa Claus Wants You. The posters have been popping up all over Chicago, New York, Miami, and in silly people’s minds. The posters show Santa pointing his finger at you as he smiles and Mrs. Claus smirks while Canada’s white, green, and blue landscape spreads out behind them, a fecund portrait of promise and friendliness.
The climate migrants move north from the warming lands of Central America, Mexico, and the southern United States. They flee the rising waters, swollen rivers and burnt earth. They crowd the roadways seeking places that have food. Santa does not say follow the money, he says seek the food. Absorb the earth.
Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wyoming, North Dakota, Canada and Santa’s Kingdom open their doors. Give us your hungry, your tired, your brown, your red, your black, your white, your masses willing to work for food, he says. Willing to reap and share.
It’s going to be bad in many places. Santa knows this, the scientists know this, C-3PO and Simone Biles will tell you this. But hockey, healthcare, and green fields of wheat, apples, and fraternity await up north. It’s Santa’s turf and it’s going to be a White Christmas, but a green future. --TK
