Jesus 2020
Jesus Christ has not been to the barber since March. Before the pandemic. He has always worn his hair long, the movies get that right, but rarely has he gone this long. The Son of God’s golden brown locks now fall to his shoulders and his beard droops to his chest, creating a striking look, matched with his deep brown skin and steel blue eyes.
Jesus’ hair length doesn’t matter, though. Like most others during this time he rarely leaves his house, and instead spends most of his time at home with his cat watching Viola Davis movies and hockey games.
But the vaccine is here and things are going to change. The economy is opening up and Jesus needs a new job. His dear friend, Misty Cooper McCray, has set him up with a Zoom interview with a good firm and Jesus knows he has to look sharp, even in these times of social distance, so he calls his barber, “I remember you!” and in he goes.
So much of his rockin’ hair, more than a year’s worth of work, falls to the barbershop floor and Jesus and his barber talk hockey and share precious laughs and Jesus gives him a good tip which he really cannot afford but figures it’s good karma.
Jesus Christ walks home through the cold and is greeted by his cat, “Hello Lucifer,” Jesus laughs and walks into the bathroom, removes his shirt and, admiring his fresh new hair cut, takes out a scissors and trims his beard. Because of COVID, the barber was not allowed to trim it and so Jesus does so himself and, after a few passes with the scissors, decides it’s time to go for it and he lathers up his face and breaks out a razor and with slow, methodic strokes, the beard comes off and, for the first time in his adult life, Jesus is clean shaven.
Short hair, no beard, a white shirt, yellow and red striped tie, and blue suit. Jesus is ready for business. He knocks them dead on the Zoom call and is hired on the spot.
Jesus scratches Lucifer’s head, “daddy’s gonna be rich,” he laughs and the cat purrs and Jesus gets a good night’s sleep and wakes up early the next day, puts on his suit and, looking sharper than ever, especially with the mask which makes him look a bit like a young Robert Redford, Jesus Christ walks to the train.
It’s his birthday. And he has a new job. --TK
