Your Smiling Eyes
Earth Day is a time to remember that our little blue planet is more than just the best place to eat spaghetti and meet girls. Earth is our past, our future, our home, our heart, and it has the cheapest real estate.
Earth is where birds sing, dogs shit, and viruses plunder. What are we learning about the Earth, and our stewardship of it, during this global pandemic? Nothing we didn’t already know or shouldn’t have already known which is we are all connected, we are all mortal and we all probably spent way too much time touching each other.
We wear masks now, as if the Earth cannot bear to see our entire face. As if the planet wants us to know that no matter how much we exploit it and abuse it, it is in charge. The virus, science, facts and the onslaught of time are dictating our fate and we have to listen and pay respect.
Some of us are searching for the perfect mask. A suitable disguise that will protect us, protect others and make us comfortable. Something that still lets us smile with our eyes. Have you noticed that beneath our masks we can still tell when someone is smiling? We can still see the light and warmth that the mask, the virus, death, and isolation cannot take.
The perfect mask is like a scarf on a winter day. It does the job and keeps us warm. It lets us grin through the tumult. After a day of surviving beneath it you take it off in front of the mirror and watch your breath explode onto the glass --TK
