The Uncivil War
Cardinals 33, Bears 21
Let’s face it; the wrong team left Chicago.
The Cardinals called Chicago home from 1922 to 1959 before they moved to St. Louis and then to their current home in Arizona in 1988. So, the South Side Cardinals have been out of Chicago longer than they were in it.
We wish they had stayed because they are a lot better than the team that did, the Bears, who have played in Chicago for a century and counting. Of course, the Bears are going to leave, too, but they’re only moving to the suburbs. That’s the plan.
The Cardinals have not always been better than the Bears, but they sure are this year, and no, we don’t really wish the Bears had left but we will always wish the Cardinals had stayed because man, the fun we’d have had, especially this year. After whipping the Bears 33-22 at Soldier Field on Sunday the Cardinals are now 10-2, the best record in the NFL, and look like they might actually reach the Super Bowl for only the second time in team history and possibly capture their first NFL title since 1947 when they were still in Chicago.
It’s in the Cards, at long last, they’re great again.
But enough about the Cardinals, even though they are a lot more fun to write about than the Bears who are now 4-8 and about as interesting as that turd we stepped in while walking the dog the other day.
Bears quarterback Andy Dalton threw four interceptions while rookie QB Justin Fields remains on the mend from bad ribs. Not every turnover was Dalton’s fault but, despite the rockin’ beard and the Texas moxie, Mr. Andy doesn’t do much for us anymore. Neither does the Bears defense, the Bears coaching staff, the Bears front office, Dopey, Sleepy, Curly, or any of Santa’s other elves for that matter.
Who do we like? David Montgomery, the Bears running back, who ambled his way to 141 total yards and a rushing touchdown. We would like to get him something nice for Christmas. Maybe a sweater?
The Bears had more total yards than the Cardinals, more first downs, and held the ball for longer but still got kicked in the Nagys.
Why? Well, those four Dalton picks we told you about helped, while the Cardinals didn’t turn it over once and that’s how this movie begins and ends and it’s also the outline for the sequel, which the Bears will probably debut next week in Green Bay.
There was a viral video going around during this game of a Bears fan at rainy, cold, windy Soldier Field battling to get his rain poncho on. He was caught in it like a fly in a spider web, struggling fiercely, admirably, while the American flag whipped in the wind behind him. He looked silly and terrible, but we could not avert our eyes.
He refused to let nature nor destiny stop him from soldiering on. --TK
